It's getting expensive! TSMC's 2nm offer nearly $25,000, 7/6nm offer doubles
The three major foundries have been in the limelight recently. Intel has announced that its manufacturing division will operate independently from the first quarter of 2024, in a full sprint for foundry business, and Samsung Electronics released its second generation 3nm process some time ago, with both giants trying to compete with TSMC. TSMC, on the other hand, has always maintained its lead, with 2nm orders already under negotiation with customers.
2nm offer close to $25,000
According to Taiwan's Electronic Times, an IC design player said that TSMC not only has a large 3nm order almost through the roof, but 2nm has also begun to start cooperation talks. In terms of price, despite the semiconductor industry being in a headwind, TSMC is still strong and rising again, and after entering the advanced process generation below 7nm, the wafer foundry offer is actually getting more and more expensive.
The IC design industry said that TSMC's 3nm price remains around $20,000, 2nm price is approaching $25,000, with mass production planned for 2025. 5/4nm is about $16,000 and 7/6nm has doubled to nearly $10,000 per wafer.
The IC design industry revealed that, as Samsung and Intel are difficult to overtake in a few years, the chip industry can only almost vote in TSMC, in the supply and bargaining on the disadvantage, can have a discount is the largest customer Apple, or large enough orders.
Detailed foundry prices revealed
Some time ago, TSMC's wafer and advanced process chip foundry price list was also revealed on Twitter. From the picture you can see TSMC's price trend in recent years, and the overall price is basically in the range mentioned by the IC design industry, however, because there are also differences in the quotes for the same products in both pictures, the prices are only for reference.
According to the image posted by user Revegnus (@Tech_ReveWafer), from the wafer foundry prices, TSMC's 90nm process was in volume production in the fourth quarter of 2004, with an offer of US$1,650 per wafer; 28nm was in volume production in the fourth quarter of 2011, with an offer of US$2,891 per wafer; and the 5nm process was in volume production in the first quarter of 2020, with an offer of US$16,988. Compared to US$9346 for 7nm, the 5nm price has increased by 81.77%.
Another image posted by Revegnus, from The Information Network, shows that TSMC is currently quoting $19,865 per wafer for 3nm and $24,570 per wafer for 2nm, which will be in production in 2025.
However, there is a discrepancy between the previous chart, where the foundry offer for 5nm wafers in 2020 is US$16,988 per wafer, and The Information Network's chart, where the foundry offer for 5nm wafers in 2020 is US$13,495 per wafer.
Although the market believes that the news that Intel has put its foundry business in its entirety can put a lot of pressure on TSMC.
But some IC design manufacturers believe that although more than one foundry cooperation options is good, but at present, whether it is Samsung, which has entered the 3nm GAA generation, or will successively launch 20A, 18A process Intel, in process technology, yield, one-stop service, customer trust and economic scale and other conditions are less than TSMC, want to grab a single price can only be more beautiful. In addition, there are competitors and customers overlap relationship exists, trust is also a problem.
It is worth noting that the advanced process at least 3 years ago to start cooperation, TSMC 3nm generation orders early with customers to establish, and 2025 mass production of 2nm has also begun to negotiate, but also TSMC in the bargaining, supply and other advantages of many parties continue to expand.
